Decorating a cake can be a joyous thing. A professional job looks good, but can be very high-priced. Truth is, decorating a cake is an art and one that isn't easily perfected. It's true, you can dig a smear of frosting out of a can and slap it onto your cake, but it takes a bit more to turn it into a work of art. Well, if you're one of those aspiring cake decorating artists, this article should get you on your way to decorating cakes that look good enough not to want to eat.
For example, let's say you want to have some written material on your cake. Stands to reason that you are going to need either some ready to use gel or perhaps a pastry bag and tips. You might even need a stencil set to keep your efforts uniform. Will you be baking a sheet cake or a layer cake? In any event, you are going to want a number of pans in different sizes. For layer cakes, they will need to be the same diameter. Cake pans and very sharp knives are in all likelihood the two things you're not going to be able to live without if you're going to do a proper job on your cake decorating.
Aside from the right tools, you want to make sure that you have a specific idea in mind before you even begin. Even though you can eat your mistakes, you'll make more progress if you don't try to wing it at first. Trust me, it won't come out very good unless you are a natural artist. For everyone else learning to decorate, having a design to follow will speed up the learning process. There is an abundance of kits that include designs; you can find them online, or in your favorite brick and mortar specialty store. Trust me, it's not a sin to use a design. With so many to choose from, it's unlikely that your guests will have seen yours.
